Corporations are people too my Friend...

This is my response to the now infamous statement that U.S. Republican Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney made a couple of months ago "corporation are people".

I'm not sure that anyone is quite sure what he meant by that. I think the gist of what he was getting at was that it doesn't matter that a billionaire with a high stake in a corporation only has to pay 15% on their capital gains tax(which is the money they make from basically doing nothing) while the average family pays more than double that amount because "there people too". So therefore, the money goes straight to "the people". Or maybe the corporation give it straight back to the people?

No. Even after writing all this down, I still don't get it.

With everybody currently clammering to say the most meaningful thing about the late great Steve Jobs, I thought I'd just include this illustration I'd done of him and also just provide a quote by Stephen Fry who would always put it in a far more articulate manner than I ever could...

After the Murdoch bashing in my last post I decided to try and offer something a little more likeable.

One of the heroes of my youth 'John Squire' once stated that it was never enough to just point out all the things that you don't like about your environment. If you want to paint an accurate and insightful picture of who you are then you must also embrace what you do like.

I agree.

Still, why I should think that anyone should care who I am or what I stand for is anybody's guess.

I am a supporter of Hugh Laurie.
All round good guy! At least, it's nice to think that he is.

He has won many awards in his time as an entertainer but perhaps one of his more surprising bit of recognition was his GQ award for "Musician of the Year", which was presented to by his one time university buddy and long time partner in comedy 'Stephen Fry'.

Upon giving him the award, Fry commented that his friend Hugh had always had a natural ability for music but more importantly, he had a natural love of it.

I've heard that a lot recently. The idea that enthusiasm and love of a vocation is very often more important that natural ability.

I find that reassuring.

This guy , his son and his now defunct newspaper "News of the World" have been in the headlines a lot due to a phone hacking scandal in the UK which continues to threaten to spread overseas to the grand old U.S of A.

Not his biggest fan but thought he had an interesting face to draw.

It's important to remain impartial at all times when illustrating these characters. every responsible illustrator knows that.

Still, He does have a kind of weather beaten look about him which I can only assume is due to him having a rough night after collapsing in the street due to a sudden attack of Botulism poisoning which would have clearly led him to have to crawl around in a back alley while racked with fits of projectile vomiting, grabbed by vicious cops and whipped on the shins with night sticks, then locked in the a drunken cell of the local jail where he was abused all night by intoxicated wino's.

Shame.

I've been keeping a low profile of late. Started working with a new company called 'Clear Pixel'.

Having a brilliant time! With regards to being allowed to be creative, it's the most content I've ever been by about a million miles.

This is one of the concepts I've been developing for them. We're in the process of creating a "floating design agency in the sky"

If anyone wants to suggest some random objects to draw then that would be amazing. Could be more interesting that if I was just to think up objects by myself.

I'd probably just end up drawing the same stuff that I always do.

Had a look at Aiskone's site again tonight for the first time in about four years.
Damn, his stuff is good.

I have to say, I often feel inspired and depressed in equal measure when looking at guy's like this.
Part of me is like "Yeah! this is the standard to strive for!" And the other part of me is saying "Damn I thought i was doing quite well until I seen this guy's stuff..."

Wacom pitch project

This has been a personal excercise I've been doing in order for me to speculate at what my options are for actually producing work that can be used in a commercial sense.

This is the result so far. Below, is a chance to see how the project progressed from the initial concept to the
final image.

This was my rough starting point. The idea was to give the impression that the wacom user

was creative this highly expressive landscape before him.

Then I added a few building Illustrations to map out the rough lines I'd already made.

Okay, so he'd have to be in space right? Of course he is. Obvious enough assumption to make. Added a few more objects also.

And if we were in space then we were going to need stars, exploding supernova things. Also,

I put in a texture type overlay to give the image a little more something or whatever.

I incorporated some swirls in order to accentuate the idea that the objects were all swirling from one place in a well, swirling fashion. More objects also.

More colour was added....

From it was just a matter of adding as much colour and detail as I felt necessary.

I continued to add a few more overlays and colour effects here and there.

then there was the logo and the text of course.

that was pretty much it. I'll probably return to this over the next few weeks though.

That's the trouble with this sort of thing.

I've had this idea for a few weeks now to Illustrate icon of the 20th Century and present them as if they're on baseball cards.

I've got quite a few lined up. This is the first one to decide that it was finished enough to allow me to post online.

A few of the other "All-Stars" are going to be a little bit more obscure.
Also, I'm still in two minds about whether to do on of Timmy Mallet or not.

This is an anonymous quote written on an unknown grave in Boot Hill cemetery, Arizona.

This is also my illustration for the week.

I could go more into the rendering by adding different tone to the letters/buildings but I'll leave it all one colour for now.

I'm not entirely certain as to where all this making forms out of buildings will lead but I'm happy to just run with it for now.

It's good practice if anything.

This is my offering for expired which is this weeks topic for Illustration Friday.

For many, when the sixties expired, so did a way of life and a philosophy of how it should be lived and what it ultimately meant.

There's a great passage from Hunter S Thompson's "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas"
where he talks about the sixties movement being like a giant wave that eventually broke at it's highest point and rolled back. For many, that seemed to happen as soon as 1970 came around.

I'm sure that it would not have been as immediate as I'm suggesting in this illustration but for many, it did seem like there was a pretty prompt return to conformity. If you listen to the accounts of the people who were a part of it then the party seemed to end quite abruptly.

It's one thing to look back on it all now with the benefit of hindsight but what would it have been like for those that were actually there?

Did they believe that the rising tide against conformity was going to last forever?

Was it really the dawn of a new age?

Or deep down, did people really know that eventually they'd have to give it all up and get back to what was perceived as "the real world".

Maybe they were too out of their minds on drugs to care either way. I like to think there was more going on that though.

So all those that decided to return to a quieter way of life, did they return to the straight and narrow or were they in actual fact the one's that left the beaten track and wandered into the wilderness?

I don't know.

I'm the romantic type. Notice that I've not drawn in a road in the direction of Wall street.

Subterranean

This is my entry for 'Subterranean'.

It's a tribute to the single by Bob Dylan which was entitled 'Subterranean Homesick Blues'.

Must have been amazing to hear something like that when it first came out.

I remember back in college I made a really misjudged comment when I suggested that hip hop had it's roots in this style of wording which was almost 'spoken word poetry'.

At this, my listener fell about laughing and proceeded to tell everyone that I'd just stated that "Bob Dylan was the one that invented Hip hop". There was no explaining myself at the time.

That wasn't what I was saying at all. But let's just say that during the sixties, spoken word poetry was very popular and that this hit single was clearly influenced by that.

Gil Scott Heron was doing spoken word also and a lot of rappers and hip hop artists still state Gil Scott Heron as an influence to this day.

So, there's some connection albeit a very murky and fuzzy one.

I will also state though that had there never been a 'Bob Dylan' it's still reasonable to assume that there would still have been a 'Public Enemy' some where along the line. :)

This is my entry for "Brave", this weeks topic on Illustration Friday.

For the subject 'Brave' I had thought about doing Richard Pryor. He was pretty brave doing all those stand up gigs and just being prepared to lay himself out bare in front of an audience.

Instead though, I've opted for Alan Badmington.

Alan Badmington is someone who has made a fully recovery from a life of stammering.

He is a retired policeman who at one point would have great difficulty speaking a sentence without the use of an electrical device which would aid his speech.

Upon retirement though, he decided to enroll on a speech therapy programme where he learned the tools and techniques which helped him reach complete fluency.

He is now a hugely successful public speaker who often lectures on self development and the importance of facing your fears.

Having had a few issues with stammering myself over the years I know how much courage it would have taken for him to put his new techniques for speaking fluently into practice and drop his old avoidance techniques that merely "got him by".

Now I've left full time employment to go freelance, this is where I spend most of my day. Once upon a time, this might have been the angle I sometimes looked up from also. "must get up....from pile of........beercans.......must promote myself online........I.................can do....it!!! Wow!! This can ain't open yet!!!" Been phoning up galleries all week to see if they will stock my work. It's an interesting process for to put yourself through. In all honesty, most of them seem annoyed that you've just made them walk across the floor to pick up the phone. Some are nice though.

Here, I'm speculating about what might have happened had Billy Idol not been blessed with an enormous amount of drive and ambition.

I often wonder about the fine line between success and failure and all the people that miss out simply because they make a certain decision at a certain time or maybe give up a split second too soon.

Here's my interpretation of early nineties dancer/performer Mark Berry, better known as "BEZ" from the Happy Mondays.

The "baggy" era-as it is often referred to-of the late eighties/early nineties- was an interesting moment in British musical history.

It has often been compared to the sixties movement and indeed there were a lot of similarities.

For one it was a youthful movement, based around guitar music for the most part. For another, most people that considered themselves a part of this life defining movement spent most of it off there tits on class A drugs.

In a lot of ways though the baggy movement was a lot more refined and less naive.

In the sixties there seemed to have been a large number of people that actually believed the party was going to last forever and that the only way was up. The age of Aquarius had come to stay. It was a bright new dawn.

Participants of the baggy era however, appeared to harbour no such dillusions. They were well aware that it was most likely going to go tits up at any moment, or maybe even right there and then.

Lefty is "worn"

This is my interpretation of Al Pacino's character "Lefty" from the magnificent "Donnie Brasco", made in 1997.

For me this has been Al Pacino's last great performance to date. For this role he dropped all the shouting and "HHHOOOHAWWS!!!" and just allowed the character of Lefty to consume him.

In the film Lefty is a worn out jaded working man for the mob going nowhere. You imagine that he was once sharp and full of ambition, eager to rise up the chain of command within the New York mafia, but now, he is straddled with debt, struggling to make monthly payments to his superiors, repeating himself in conversations and muttering to himself after one too many cocktails.

To me, Al Pacino is at his best when you look at the screen and you don't actually see Al Pacino. You see the characters he portrays.

In the Godfather he is Michael Corleone, at first honourable and largely innocent of the violent background from which he hails but later becomes corrupted by that very world that he had formerly resisted.

In Scarface he is Tony Montana, the macho asshole, seduced by the bright lights and riches that the American Dream claims to offer.

And in Donnie Brasco he is the ultimately doomed "Lefty".

I like to think that we've still to see at least once, another great performance from Pacino before he's done. The recent one's haven't been great to be honest.

From a personal point of view, I can't draw Al Pacino. I can't get the look right.
Can never get the eyes dark enough or the shape of his face right.

On this occasion though, I may have captured Lefty pretty well, although not nearly as good as Pacino did.

This weeks Illustration Friday.

Promised myself that I'd always do saomething for "I.F." each week and i wasn't going to let things slip just four weeks into my promise. I've just sketched this out tonight fairly quickly. I'd like to have spent some more time on it but I'm really tied with with other illustration gigs at the moment.

It started off as a serious piece where he was supposed to be singing something mournful but then I gave him some lyrics to sing and it turned out quite humourous. Which on this occasion, I like.

Started off as a doodle but I just kept going. I've ended up drawing it for most of the week. I dread to think what would have happened if I'd decided to add some colour.

This lot hailed from Chorlton Manchester who sadly broke up in 2005.

I still can't help but get a little miffed as to why this band never received more acclaim than they did. Especially as seeing at the time they were around most other bands were still trying to sound like Oasis or the Stereophonics.

If anyone has spotify or Napster then just type them into the search function and you'll get all the albums.

This week the word we have to interperet is "cracked".

Anyone recognize this character from a famous 90's movie?
The only thing that may make this slightly difficult is the fact that it's not an especially close likeness to the actor that played this character who has most definitely "cracked".

Usually only uplad cropped versions these but on this instance I've decided to stick up the whole thing.

The only thing is that with this one it's a different shape to the majority of the rest of the illustrations in the book so how's it going to fit on the page I wonder? If you look at the front cover here then you'll get what I mean.

It seems quite neat and tidy to follow on the last post with this one seeing as "The Road to Perdition" was most certainly influenced by "Lone Wolf and Cub". The centre of both stories being a man and his child.

n fact, Japanese art has long been an influence on Western society. Another perfect example would be the Akira Kurosawa film from the 1950's "Seven Samurai". This was paid homage to in 1960 when director John Sturges made "The Magnificent Seven".

The graphic novel "Road to Perdition" is written by Max Allan Collins and beautifully illustrated by Richard Piers Rayner. Eventually it made it to the big screen when director Sam Mendes chose to make it his follow up movie to the Oscar winning "American Beauty".

Alot of the compositions in the original graphic novel can be seen recreated in the movie by the legendary cinematographer Conrad L. Hall.

The film itself looks amazing but it couldn't have been realised without the initial illustrations in the original graphic novel.

The drawings blow me away and leave me inspired every time. Even now, I want to stop typing this blog and get back to drawing.

Amazingly drawn, has inspired many a subsequent graphic novel(and even a few motion pictures, more on that later).

Superbly drawn and executed with the studious work ethic that you come to expect from Japanese art.

Winner of the Eisner award in 2001 and winner of the Harvey award in 2000 and 2002.

Two-minute sketches

A while back, I started doing two minute sketches where I'd only spend a maximum of 2 minutese on any one drawing, scan it in, then upload it. It was a good project but then for some reason i stopped doing it after about a week.

As you can see I've decided to start again.

Some of these sketches might turn out pretty neat, some might kind of suck, nevertheless they shall all be uploaded.

I done this years ago when I first got photoshop. I was totally hooked even though all I could do on it at that time was adjust the brightness of a picture and use the brush tool.

As you can see, here I've utilised those two powerful functions to the max here.

for every fourteen people. In any one day you could appear
up to 300 times on CCTV.

Focal Range is a solo exhibition by Edinburgh-based graphic
artist Derm,
highlighting the prevalence of CCTV cameras in the urban
environment. Using a variety of media including photography,
spraypaint and screen-printing.

Focal Range looks back at those looking at us.

... going to be focusing purely on my doodles, drawings, illustrations, sketches and scribbles that I do of buildings and other structures. There is also a hell of a lot of telephone lines in there also which for some reason I've became completely obsessed with of late.

I'll be doing an opening for itdown in London this summer. More news on that shortly.

Looking to hire a mini bus so me and the rest of the assorted scottish goons can make the trip south of the border.

Nothing too intense, just the usual posse' of Meth dealers, Benefit fraudsters, Corrupt lawyers, Crackpot artists, Crackpot Musicians, Alcoholic skateboarders.

Hadrian's wall was built for the likes of us.

The Jacobite rebellion would have been proud.

I think if my 19 year old self could see me now and the alarming lack of animation that I produce these day's he'd be slightly alarmed.

Should get on that really. Especially seeing as I kind of set myself a deadline to produce a full length feature in one year. Made that declaration six months ago. Oops!!

This is the official teaser for the Tarantino's upcoming world war 2 epic "Inglorious Basterds"

Will it be any good? Time will tell. Something tells me that the movie world has kind of moved on since Tarantino was the biggest thing in Hollywood. I enjoyed Kill Bill when it came out but now in hindsight it doesn't strike me as anything special. It's almost as if he was wracking his brains for ideas after his first three films and then suddenly went "ah, let's just make a martial arts movie with loads of sword fights and cute girls." Still, the six minute anime scene is still pyoor mintit'!!

I'm most interested to see how he has directed Brad Pitt, an actor who's at his best when portraying slightly tweaked out characters(Jesse James, Jeffrey Goines in twelve monkeys) Yeah, less hollwood a-list macho hunk, more tweaked out screwball!!

Thought I'd upload this little guy. Mainly because he looks a little strange if you ask me.

I've got loads more work going on at the moment but the dilemma is that it's all for this book of illustrations that I'm putting together and I don't really want to stick them on the net.

Well, I might stick on a couple. I'll how it pans out.

Don't know if this guy will make it into print though.

The book'll be out a little later this year in the Summer so look out for it.
